Board 2017 - 2018

The board for next season is formed!
Chairman: Sharmaine Linker
Tresurer: Gert van Dam
Secretary: Marianka Wajer
Technical affairs: Tim van Haeringen
External affairs: Igor Damming
The (new) board members introduce themselfs:

My name is Sharmaine Linker, I am 21 years old and I am studying Technology & Operations Management. In the past three years, I was active at my study association: TeMa. At TeMa I have been part of the promotion committee and I organised the yearly international study project. As almost all my TeMa-friends will either graduate this year, or will do an internship next year, I decided to leave TeMa as well to start a new adventure. Next year I will be the chairman of Amor. Next to that, I will become member of both the Sjots- and Diës-committee. If there are any questions left, don’t hesitate to ask them. I hope to see you all in the upcoming year both during trainings and at the activities.

For now, I wish you all a great summer!

Hey eveyone,

Most of you will already know me: I'm Marianka, 23 years old and I'm almost finished with my study phyical therapy. Since the 19th of May, I am the new secretary on the AMOR board. I have been playing badminton for about 12 years, of which the last 4 years have been at AMOR. In addition, I'm also a trainer twice a week. Beside badminton you can find me on the water during the sailing season to give sailing instructions, but I'll be sailing and kite surfing myself aswell!

Dear AMORians,

My name is Tim, and I will take over the position of technical affairs from Igor, who will be doing external affairs from now on. For those of you who do not know me I will briefly introduce myself.

I am 23 years old, and have been living in Groningen for quite some time. At the moment I am doing my masters in mathematics and physics at the RUG, which will still occupy me for some time to come. It has been over 14 years since I started playing badminton. After doing athletics for a while I was interested in trying something new, and my father suggested I would try either badminton or table tennis. I chose badminton(of course) and have been playing ever since. I have played at BC GO! for a long time, another club in Groningen, and I have been playing at AMOR for about 5 years now. This season I also started playing competition for AMOR, which I have really enjoyed a lot.

I look forward to dedicating myself to the club in the coming year together with the rest of the board, and making this a great year!

Dear all,

For everyone that doesn’t know me: I am Igor. I’m going to handle the External Affairs on behalf of the AMOR board 2017 - 2018. I’ve played badminton for about 12 years from which I’ve been a trainer for at least 5 years. I’m studying Econometrics and Operations Research at the RUG. I’m 20 years old and have lived all my life in the greatest city of the Netherlands, the one that is famous for the phrase “There is nothing above…” indeed GRONINGEN. I like to drink a beer with my friends (as a good student is expected to), gaming (PS4) and playing badminton. It will be my 2nd AMOR board year so I’ve already some experience. However I will handle different affairs than I’ve done before so I hope you are in good hands ;)

Dear AMOR members,

I want to notify you that I will be staying on as Treasure at GSBC AMOR. I would like to thank everyone that came before me and I see being a member of this board as a fun, educational and challenging experience. For everyone that doesn’t know me:

I’m Gert van Dam, 23 years old and I life in the city of Groningen. At this moment I’m in my 4th (and last) year of “Bedrijfskunde MER” at the “Hanze Hoogeschool”. I’m currently doing an internship at “Ommelander Ziekhuis” where I’m program-manging in order to improve collaboration with the UMCG. After I’ve played a year of badminton in Dronten, before I went to university, I’ve started playing againg during my semester abroad. When I got back to The Netherlands I started playing at GSBC AMOR.

I’m looking forward to have a great time with my fellow board members and will see all the other AMOR members during the drinks and training!

Kind regards,

Gert van Dam

GSBC AMOR just fell short in first game of the champions league play offs

The first team of GSBC AMOR lost the first of two play offs games with 2-5 form BV van Zijderveld. The only chance left for AMOR to get in the champions league is to win the match in Amstelveen and then also win the following Golden Game deciding whom will be promoted.

The day began promising for the students. In a crowed and noisy Struikhal and after playing the doubles the score was still all tied up. While the girls were not able to get the initiative due to the very aggressive nature of their opponents playing style, were the very experienced gentleman able to top their opponents.

Also during the singles it was starting off as a close call. Marianka Wajer had a difficult match and sadly no way of winning. But Brent Maarsingh made a spectacular come back in the first game, which he won, followed by a loss in the second due to a lack of patients. Lucky for AMOR and himself he kept his cool in the third game and was able to defeat his opponent which resulted in a still tied score.

Meike Brul had a tough time against the winner of this year’s AMOR Master tournament, Ieva Pope. In the first game she had trouble finding the edges of the court. However the second game she stood up straight and was a way better match for her opponent. Sadly enough she had to admit that her Latvian opponent was just too much. Remko Bakker found himself in the exact same place as Meike did and also lost which made the pressure on the Mix increase since AMOR was now 2 points behind.

The second mix played by Rik Wilbers and Bianca Oosterhaven were destined to start first. They lost their first game with a mere 13-21. In the meantime the other mix played by Brent Maarsighn and Marianka Wajer also started. Halfway through both couples where ahead of their opponents yet only Brent and Marianka were able to win their game. This meant that the score now added up to 2-5 and thus all the chances of GSBC AMOR winning this match vanished. The mix by Brent and Marianka was therefore ceased and the final result of the first exiting duel between GSBC AMOR and BV van Zijderveld was 2-5.

Because the first duel ended in a loss for AMOR, the next duel needs to end in a win if they want to remain in the race for the champions league. If they manage to archive this a Golden Game will be played deciding whether or not they can play in the champions league next season. Yesterday’s game at least showed that the presumed big difference between BV van Zijdervled and AMOR is not that big after all.
